This course is designed to provide Signal Corps officers the instruction required for assignment as a Battalion Signal Staff Officer (S-6). Instruction includes the capabilities, limitations, and employment of Signal and user owned equipment as it supports the Warfighter. The S6 will perform the 25A critical tasks and supporting skills and knowledge required for the graduate to accomplish his/her duties and responsibilities to the prescribed performance standard.


The course consists solely of Signal related instruction and specifically addresses tactical communications/IT systems and doctrine, planning, execution, management and resources allocation; planning and integrating information systems and Army Battle Command Systems (ABCS) equipment unique to a non-Signal Warfighting battalion; telecommunications; the installation, operation and maintenance (10M) of data communications, user-owned systems, network encryption devices, Communication Security (COMSEC) management, teleprocessing and distribution database systems, which support battlefield IT systems; and digital tactical network management and systems administration functions at the Battalion S6 level.


a. The S6 Course is 5 weeks, 2 days in duration and is programmed to train 208 students annually (eight (8) iterations with maximum class size of 32 students). The Battalion S6 Course prepares Signal Officers with standardized instructions required for assignment as a Signal Staff Officer (S6) in a Maneuver Battalion. This course is structured in modules and lessons.

b. The training centers on the S6 communication system functions and doctrine as they certain to network planning and management. Instruction is an innovative combination of tactical network design and management laced with application exercises that highlight the roles of the S6. The students study basic Army/DoD communications networks and apply instruction to scenario based practical exercises.
